Welcome to my blog. It
has been on my mind for a while, but I did not think anyone would be
interested. I recently realised it did not matter. There are a few
things I want to say anyway.
Nowadays, there are not many literary salons around. We have blogs instead.
Do not be fooled. I am no writer. Barely another specimen of my generation, with a bit of specificity.
Nowadays, there are not many literary salons around. We have blogs instead.
Do not be fooled. I am no writer. Barely another specimen of my generation, with a bit of specificity.
I certainly have time for
a blog. I am unemployed, and a perfect reflexion of my generation,
doomed to precariousness and struggle. To me however, this is a very
peculiar moment of my up-until-recently achievement-focused life. I
can explore activities besides wealth-production, and step back from
our well-geared rat-race system. I sometimes experience life-changing
break-throughs, other times frightening nervous break-downs. Maybe
these experiences were in me before, but I did not have time to pause
and feel.
We are the globalised,
ever-changing, unstable generation. Our parents had life-long jobs.
They bought flats in central parts of towns, got married and had
children. Sometimes in their twenties. We have too many degrees,
tweets, ex-partners, likes and lease applications. We spend a third
of our life browsing the internet in search of how to fill the rest
of our time : a new date, a new destination, job, restaurant, gig,
trend and dress. Do we enjoy the movement or have we barely learnt to
deal with the instability?
It was the reality of
economics as much as my own desire which drew me from Paris to
London, and from London to Berlin. I told you : such a stereotype.
With a twist of Arabic female neurosis, my beloved would say. Not
sure it makes me special. Someway or other, all of us Westerners
suffer from Oriental neurosis, thanks to our yet unsuspected Eastern
cultural subconscious. Did you know tariff
comes from Arabic? From taârrif,
meaning “the process of becoming a known object”. I discovered
that in a beautiful book, Le
Voyage des Mots by Alain
Rey.
I
guess this is what I am doing here in Berlin. Defining my Tariff.
Becoming a known object to myself. Attempting to find my worth within
myself only. In a society dominated by money values, it is hard to
believe that one's worth lies within. It may sound obvious, almost
corny, on paper - or shall I say screen. You think it is so obvious?
Try it. Leave your driven job and start getting by. Experience the
sense of guilt and failure which society constantly attempts to impose
upon you. Fight it off and hopelessly repeat to yourself : “my
worth is within”. Try if you dare. Take off all your social
adornments, and come naked to face your family, your friends,
society, mankind. Look at your desires and hopes, your fears and
doubts and let them be your ultimate judges. I warn you : do not
expect any mercy, they are the most unforgiving of all.
Or
else, stay where you are, drink your tea out of that fancy mug, lean
back on your newly-acquired sofa and read my blog. I'll tell you all
about it.

Mon
Tarif
Bienvenue
Je me suis
cela me soit particulier.
lisez mon blog. Je vous raconterai tout.
I cannot wait. Hit me.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. More, please
